through the looking class (TTLC) is a fictional cinematheque that seeks to rewrite the history of cinema from its margins, by building an archive of films that have been overlooked, marginalised, or rendered invisible.
Its collection, gathered and organised from pirated files found online, brings together works primarily directed by women, originating from the Global South, or belonging to experimental practices.
Through an interactive database and a programme of screenings, TTLC transforms the archive into a space for discovery, transmission, and the circulation of images. Shifted from solitary practice into a collective space, piracy here allows us to reconsider the logics of ownership, circulation, and cultural preservation. More than a cinematheque, TTLC proposes a community of gazes: a looking class attentive to what has been forgotten or left at the margins.
The first presentation of TTLC took place in the independant project-space KBK in Brussels. Turned into a speakeasy-cinema, the place opened daily at 6pm and screening starte at 8pm. A serie of various protocols, objects and editions extended the project and its ideas about knowledge production and circulatioin.
